Reflections on the Coast
There is something special about California. Whether it is the glistening waters of the vast ocean, the dazzling lights of the busy cities, the progressive activity, or the overwhelming dreams and realities of the people, California is never stagnant with hope. Born and raised in San Diego, I have become the typical "California girl" with a hint of chic sophistication, an easy-going and relaxed personality, and an appreciation of life’s riches and opportunities. I never thought of myself as stereotypical of California, but after leaving the Golden State I have heard multiple times, “You look like a California girl” and “Wow, you’re from California? That’s so nice.” Both statements were said with envy and eagerness to know more about me as if I was a representative of some important and wonderful greatness.
To investigate such wonder and awe over the Golden State, I interviewed two of my friends from California, Rachel and Greer, inquiring how they think California has influenced America as well as their personal lives. In my interview with Rachel and my interview with Greer, we confirmed The Eagles’ “Hotel California” theory: “You can check out any time you’d like, but you can never leave.” California is established in us all, some more so than others. Its easygoing vibe has influenced our personalities, and its golden opportunities have influenced America.
As Katy Perry says, “You can travel the world, but nothing comes close to the golden coast.”
